Environmental Lab

Analytical testing services supporting the study of long-term urban ecological and environmental impacts

About

The IIHS Environmental Lab monitors water, soil, and air quality to track environmental changes over space and time at the IIHS, Kengeri Campus and connected semi-natural ecosystems.

The Lab supports the IIHS Long-Term Urban Ecological Observatory (LTUEO) in studying environmental and climate change in the context of rapid urbanisation. It has instruments and equipment to analyse basic water, wastewater, soil, compost, and ambient air quality parameters, with infrastructure for physiochemical, microbiology, and soil physical parameter testing.

The Lab continuously monitors water and wastewater quality from ongoing experiments and pilot treatment plants, soil health, compost quality, and ambient air quality in and around the Campus. This helps interpret seasonal variations and assess the impacts of urbanisation on surrounding ecology, environment, biodiversity, agriculture and human health.

The Lab supports campus infrastructure development, environmental impact studies, urban agriculture, biodiversity monitoring, and forest ecology through its analytical and experimental capabilities. It is part of an early-warning system for responding to environmental change and informing interventions for the sustainable management of the Campus and surrounding ecosystems.

Research

The Lab focuses on long-term urban ecological impact studies, climate change, urban agriculture, food-waste compost quality, solid waste management, and soil health on the Campus and in the adjoining Sulikere forest.

Support to the LTUEO

The Lab supports the LTUEO through the observation and measurement of air, water, and soil, generating long-term environmental data to support research on ecological change and sustainable campus management.

Urban agriculture

The Lab provides technical assistance for soil health monitoring and nutrient management under urban agriculture projects at the Campus, helping monitor soil conditions and inform agricultural practices.

Solid waste management

The Lab continuously monitors compost quality at different stages of the solid waste management process on Campus and supports the generation of good-quality compost.

Water and soil health in Sulikere forest

The Lab conducts research experiments in the Sulikere forest area to understand urban forest ecology and the impacts of environmental and climate change. It monitors water quality and soil health to assess environmental conditions and their variations over time.
