The project aimed to enhance sanitation initiatives in Tamil Nadu. It established the Technical Support Unit (TSU) within the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu (GoTN). The TSU demonstrated Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) solutions in urban areas, contributing to GoTN’s sanitation strategy and supporting the scaling of these solutions across urban Tamil Nadu. Key objectives included policy support, infrastructure design, and capacity building. Outcomes included a state-wide investment plan for treatment facilities, clustering of urban bodies for optimised resource use, and the utilisation of sewage treatment plants for fecal sludge management. The programme also supported behaviour change campaigns, capacity development, private sector engagement, and improved safety standards.
