Internet of Things (IoT) Lab

Advancing IoT systems, platform engineering, and hardware and software development.

About

The IIHS Internet of Things (IoT) Lab anchors IoT systems and platform engineering, hardware and software at IIHS.

It develops and deploys simple, scalable and cost-effective open-source technology to enable the operation and management of sustainable cities, starting with the IIHS, Kengeri Campus.

The vast and complex data collected is analysed using the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning to achieve real-time control to optimise and improve the efficiency and sustainability of the Campus. The Campus as well as the adjoining forest, lake and peri-urban development, are envisaged as a 600-acre Lab.

Areas of Work

The Lab was established to transform the IIHS, Kengeri Campus into a dynamic testbed for IoT-enabled systems. It explores how connected technologies can reshape Campus operations, improve sustainability, and support new forms of research and learning.

Sensing and Data Collection

The Lab uses a network of smart sensors integrated across the Campus to collect real-time data on energy use, weather, environmental conditions, agricultural output, occupancy, and equipment performance. Through edge computing, this data can be processed locally, enabling faster responses and informed decision-making.

Prototyping Hardware and Software

The Lab prototypes and tests IoT tools and systems tailored to Campus needs, including the development of CampusOS, an open-source, modular platform that integrates and manages multiple IoT devices and applications across the IIHS Campus in Bengaluru.

Data-Driven Optimisation and Resilient Systems

The Lab uses Campus data to identify patterns and insights that improve resource management, maintenance planning, and operational decision-making, while developing resilient digital systems that support continuity and adaptability. These include backup servers, uninterrupted power systems, a solar-powered microgrid, redundant internet connections, and disaster recovery mechanisms, supported by a flexible and scalable technology stack.
